The Lincoln junior varsity girls soccer team came one step closer to catching Pioneer Valley League leading Placer by defeating Colfax 1-0 in Lincoln Thursday.

The Fighting Zebras (6-1-1, 13-1-1 overall) scored early in the match against the Falcons and then held off their opponents for the victory. The visitors only got off one shot on goal and it was unsuccessful.

“I told them straight up; you set the bar for yourselves,” said first-year coach Shonna Fraser, a 2010 graduate of Lincoln High. “It will be your decision on where you want to be in league. Do you want to take first or second? You have to set a bar and strive for it.”

The JV squad’s only loss this season came at the hands of the Hillmen in a 1-0 match March 26. The Zebras’ only tie was a 1-1 rematch with Placer April 21.

But, Placer’s record is 6-1-1 as well. The Hillmen lost to Colfax 2-1 April 14.

Although Placer would have the one-win edge if the two teams were to tie for the PVL crown, both clubs would be recognized as league co-champions.
