The Lincoln High School opened up this weekend’s home stand with the freshman Zebras defeating Vista Del Lago 33-23. The Zebras jumped out to a 21-0 lead early into the second quarter. P.J Manley opened the floodgates with a 17-yard touchdown run. After an Eagles fumble, the Zebras took five plays to get back into the end zone when quarterback Elija Garcia connected with Scott Trembinski for an 11-yard touchdown. The longest run of the game occurred when Daniel Leyua broke a string of tackles to complete a 62-yard score. The visiting Eagles made the game competitive with two unanswered touchdowns midway into the third quarter. On Lincoln’s next drive, an errant snap gave Vista Del Lago a safety narrowing the score to 21-15. The turning point of the game came on the free kick. The Eagles failed to down the ball and Lincoln recovered at Vista Del Lago’s 44-yard line. It was a misunderstanding of special teams rules. Lincoln made the most of the opportunity when Leyua scored four plays later on a 24-yard gallop to put the Zebras up 27-15. Nick Cobleigh effectively ended any chance for an Eagles’ comeback with an 11-yard score of his own. The 33-23 victory was a welcome turnaround from last week’s road loss to Davis. “I thought they improved a lot over last week,” said Zebras head coach Dan Williams. “A lot better tonight, a big improvement.”
