Police, Chamber show off new digs
Lincoln’s Police Department and the Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce, both recently moving into new headquarters, are inviting the public to tour both facilities on Thursday, Nov. 20. Visitors will be treated to light refreshments, guided tours, and an opportunity to meet and visit with Lincoln’s law enforcement team and chamber staff from 3 to 6 p.m. The chamber office tour will include member home-based businesses with products on display. Downtown merchants will also be open for shoppers and visitors. Lincoln Police Headquarters is now in Beermann Plaza at 640 5th St., the former Lincoln City Hall site. The 10,000-square-foot building was remodeled for the police department’s needs and features a police department history display inside the foyer. Previously, Lincoln Police Headquarters was at 770 Seventh St. in a 10,000-square-foot building that is now a substation for the department’s public safety dispatch staff, patrol, property/evidence, and Citizens on Patrol staff assigned to operations. In 1998, the Lincoln Police Department consisted of 14 police officers and five dispatchers. Today, the Police Department employs 36 sworn officers, eight dispatchers, two records clerks, one administrative secretary and 38 Citizens on Patrol members. “We are very proud of our new headquarters, which includes an excellent venue for training. We have a great law enforcement history here in Lincoln and one of our realized priorities is the completion of the displays we have in the entry where memoirs are exhibited so visitors can visually relive our rich past,” said Police Lt. Paul Shelgren. “We’re all looking forward to sharing our new headquarters with the public.” The chamber office, also located in Beermann Plaza at 540 F St. was one of this year’s “Make A Difference Day” projects sponsored by the Lincoln Volunteer Center. Chamber President Mike Lee encourages chamber members and the public to visit the organization’s new office. “Make A Difference Day was the first giant step in a minor renovation of the historic building, which will soon be repainted by volunteers,” Lee said. “We’ve opened up a conference room for our members’ use and are making great strides toward making the Chamber office the core of member promotion and support.” For more information about the Nov. 20 event, call the Chamber Office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at 645-2035.
