Lincoln High’s varsity boys soccer team is locked in the middle of a tight race at the top of the Pioneer Valley League standings with El Dorado and Colfax.
The Zebras are still unbeaten at 5-0-4 in league play but El Dorado (8-2) and Colfax (5-2-2) are also in contention for the league title. Three teams will qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section, Division IV playoffs from the PVL, with fourth-place Whitney (6-4) still battling for one of those spots.
Lincoln played at El Dorado Wednesday and will close the regular season at Placer at 7 p.m. Monday and against visiting Mesa Verde at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday.
Lincoln tied Placer (3-6-1) 0-0 in the first round of league play and defeated Mesa Verde (0-9) 7-0.
Lincoln coach Javier Banuelos said his team doesn’t discuss the possibility of finishing the league season undefeated.
“We don’t talk about it,” Banuelos said. “One thing we talked about from the get-go is one game at a time. We talk about the next opponent and don’t look ahead to anybody because every team is so different.”
Lincoln tied visiting Colfax 1-1 Monday as Rolando Desantiago scored for the Zebras in the first half.
“It was pretty much exactly what you would expect – physical, back-and-forth and evenly played,” Banuelos said.
The Zebras also won 2-0 at Bear River on Oct. 22. Ali Jeffery and Miguel Morales both scored a second-half goal and Ram Parker and Ivan Ruiz had assists for the Zebras.
Banuelos has been pleased with Lincoln’s increased offense in the second half of the league season.
“Now we are starting to move and balance it out and getting it all together,” Banuelos said. “Everything is pretty much evenly balanced and the defense is still holding up like it’s been and we’re starting to get a little more offense.”
