By Cheri March The News Messenger
Robert Vargas graduated from Lincoln High School in 1994.

The death of a Lincoln man in a suspected homicide remained under investigation Tuesday, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department.

Family members discovered the body of Robert Joseph Vargas, 32, in the brush behind his South Forbes Road home at approximately 1 p.m. Friday with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound, Placer County Sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Ausnow said.

Vargas, a Lincoln High School graduate, lived on the Thermalands property owned by his grandfather, Don Pierce, and Pierce’s wife, Virginia.

An autopsy was performed Monday, according to family members.

Further information was unavailable pending investigation results.

“We are following up on all available leads and making this case a top priority,” Ausnow said.

Funeral services for Vargas are on hold as the investigation continues.
