Sheridan resident Jennifer Murphy will spent 10 months doing public service with AmeriCorps.

Jennifer Murphy of Sheridan is one of 311 young people pledging to perform 10 months of public service throughout the country as part of the 14th class of the National Civilian Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program.

As a corps member, Murphy will spend 10 months getting things done for America. Although based at the NCCC campus in Perry Point, Maryland, Murphy will spend the next six weeks working to prevent vines, shrubs and trees from taking over the parks in Charlottesville, Va.

Murphy said, "I am looking forward to seeing what our team can accomplish day in and day out. I hope to walk away from this program knowing that I made a difference, that my time was used to enrich the lives of others."

Before the end of her 10-month stint, Murphy will work on at least three other projects, including projects supporting the rebuilding efforts of those communities destroyed by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential, leadership program for young people ages 18 to 24. In exchange for completing 1,700 hours of service during a 10-month term, the young people receive an education award, a living stipend and housing. AmeriCorps programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency. Interested applicants and project sponsors are encouraged to learn more by visiting www.americorps.-gov/nccc or calling (800) 942-2677.
