Walmart to open Neighborhood Market in old Rainbow Market building
Fresh and Easy to open by end of March
Fresh groceries will be sold once again at the vacant Rainbow Market building but when that will happen is not certain. That’s according to Walmart spokesperson Delia Garcia. She said no opening date for the store has been set. “We’re really pleased to be able to share with you and the community that we are planning a Walmart Neighborhood Market in that location,” Garcia said. The store will sell fresh groceries such as produce, meats and dairy products, Garcia said, and frozen foods and basic household products. “Our real focus with the store is to be able to serve the community with fresh and affordable groceries,” Garcia said. She said a Neighborhood Market ranges between 30,000 and 60,000 square feet, but didn’t have the “exact square footage for this location.” A timeline for construction hasn’t been set, according to Garcia, who said construction and renovation could take 10 to 12 months. Garcia said “tenant improvements” need to be done to the Rainbow Market building. There is currently a permit on the building’s window for electrical work. “Some of the things that will be done are all of the interior infrastructure, like the shelving, paint and flooring,” Garcia said. “Everything to make it Walmart branded on the interior.” Walmart is preparing to go out to bid for a contractor to do the work, Garcia said. “We are really excited, in addition to bringing in the Walmart brand, that we are going to be reusing an existing site, which brings value to the location,” Garcia said. “We’ll be able to make it a vital part of the community.” In other news, “things are on track” for the construction of a Fresh and Easy grocery store, according to Fresh and Easy spokesman Brendan Wonnacott. The store is being built near the intersection of Sterling and Joiner parkways, between Lowe’s and Red Robin. “We are excited to be getting closer to opening,” Wonnacott said. He would not say when the store will open. “We are not set to announce that just yet. It will be by the end of March,” Wonnacott said. The construction fencing has been taken down, since at least last week. Wonnacott said Fresh and Easy, still in the process of hiring for the store, is looking for “customer assistants and team leads mostly.” When asked how many employees have been hired, Wonnacott wouldn’t say. The store will be “smaller in size than your typical supermarket,” said Wonnacott, but will offer “your everyday items, anything from eggs, produce and chicken to household items.” “It’s designed for the modern consumer, folks looking for easy grab-and-go items and prepared items,” Wonnacott said. “All items are made without preservatives so we make them fresh daily and ship them fresh to the store.”
