Zebras save best for last ... again
Dramatic finishes are becoming a habit for Oscar Fernandez and Lincoln High School’s football team. Fernandez’s 1-yard touchdown run with 1:20 to play Friday night lifted the Zebras to a 28-21 victory over Natomas in their home opener. Lincoln is 2-0, and each victory has been a thriller. Last week, Fernandez scored on a 1-yard run with 37 seconds left to give Lincoln a 28-21 victory over Woodcreek in Roseville Natomas had more time than Woodcreek to mount a last-minute rally against Lincoln. The Nighthawks got as far as the Zebras’ 32-yard line before quarterback Jakori Ford was sacked as time expired. Ford’s 33-yard touchdown run with 7:38 to play tied the score at 21-all after Lincoln had taken the lead on Bobby Humiston’s 4-yard scoring run. Humiston also returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. The Zebras scored on two big plays in the first half, with the second being an 81-yard fumble return by Anthony Esparza Those two plays kept Lincoln in the game despite the offense sputtering. The Zebras had three turnovers in the first half. Lincoln’s offense has managed just one first-half touchdown in two games. “It took a little bit to get our offense going,” head coach Ken Lowe said. “(Turnovers) killed use.” In both games, the offense came alive in the second half. The Zebras have scored five touchdowns in the second half. Lincoln’s junior varsity team improved to 1-1 with a 30-22 victory. Cameron Tatem caught an 8-yard touchdown pass with 3:31 to play.
