Lincoln softball squad ties Roseville, opens season 1-1-1
Senior Stephanie Tofft off to hot start for Zebras
By Russ Edmondson The News Messenger

Lincoln High’s varsity softball team stayed at .500 on the season with Tuesday’s 4-4 tie at Roseville.

Lincoln coach Donna Tofft said the game was called after seven innings because of “darkness, cold and it being a non-league game.”

Lincoln went up 4-1 with three runs in the top of the third but the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Lincoln senior Stephanie Tofft tripled to lead off the third inning and she scored when Shante Wright reached base on an error.

Later in the inning Kayla Newberry hit a two-run double to score Shelby Jones and Ashleigh Stidman. Tofft also pitched a complete game for the Zebras.

“It was a good game,” Donna Tofft said. “Two evenly matched teams.”

Lincoln lost 6-2 to visiting Casa Roble one day earlier.

“I thought we played well. We didn’t hit as well as I thought we would but (Casa Roble senior pitcher Whitney Waltrip) is probably one of the most dominant pitchers in the Sacramento area . . . I thought we played solid – last year (against same pitcher) we lost to them 10-0 in five innings.”

Waltrip had 10 strikeouts in Monday’s game.

Tofft hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to score Ashley Kencke and Kacie Freymond. Her hit made it 3-2 but Casa Roble answered with three runs.

Junior Nikoli Sharp pitched a complete game for the Zebras.

Lincoln crushed visiting Center 15-0 on Friday in its season opener as Tofft pitched a one-hitter, walked two batters and struck out 10 in this five-inning game.

Tofft (4-4, three runs, three RBI), Sharp (3-4, four runs, triple, two RBI), Katie Emerson (1-1, run, double, three RBI) and Wright (1-2, run, two RBI) led the Lincoln offense.

“I think we are a better hitting team this year overall, the kids have been eager to learn,” Donna Tofft said. “The biggest thing we want them to realize is that they can win everything. ‘You guys are good, make the corrections.’”
