Shorthanded Zebras win twice at own soccer tournament
Lincoln High’s varsity girls soccer team went 2-1 at its annual tournament over the weekend. The Zebras (4-3-1) beat Forest Lake Christian 2-1 and lost to Union Mine 2-0 on Friday. Lincoln then beat Sacramento 1-0 on Saturday. Colfax beat Roseville in Saturday’s championship match. Lincoln’s Shonna Fraser scored both goals against Forest Lake while Lincoln was missing six starters against Union Mine because of flu or injury. Union Mine scored with two minutes left in the first half and with 15 seconds remaining in the second half. Lincoln’s Quianna Talley scored the goal against Sacramento as Alyssa Ruiz had the assist. Talley was held out of the previous four matches with a quad injury. “I wish we were healthy, we have a lot of kids hurt,” Lincoln coach Jason Treanor said. “But it was good that we got a lot of the role players some good time – that’s the good part. And we came out with two wins (at the tournament).” Lincoln’s junior varsity team went 1-1-1, beating Cristo Rey (3-0), falling to Union Mine (2-1) and tying Marysville (3-3). Roseville beat Colfax for the JV title. “The tournament was a huge success,” Treanor said. “Thanks to the parents and players as well as the City of Lincoln and (Lincoln Little League) for helping us use McBean (Park) for the JV tournament.” Lincoln opens Pioneer Valley League play at 7 p.m. today against visiting Whitney. The next PVL match isn’t until next Wednesday, when the Zebras play at 4 p.m. at Bear River. “It’s very important for our moral (to start strong in league),” Treanor said.
