Cancel out-of-town seminars, conferences

If I understand recent news articles and community presentations correctly, the city of Lincoln is facing a dire budget situation. That scenario involves a $2,000,000 revenue shortfall and reportedly necessitates closing a library, closing a fire station, and removing numerous employees from their jobs.

The city is also reportedly considering a special tax measure later this year to protect our vital city services. If the picture that has been painted is accurate, now would be the time for city management to demonstrate their commitment to the cause. An excellent example would be the immediate cancellation of all professional training conferences and seminars that are taken at city expense.

Responses to such requests usually result in answers like “It’s already in the budget” or “It’s in my employment contract” or “I have been asked to serve on a panel.”

I would suggest that any attempt to convince the public to “save the sinking ship” start with a commitment by city management to set an example that is evident to employees and to city residents. The cancellation of all out-of-town conferences and seminars would be an excellent start.
