Lincoln High’s varsity volleyball team finished the season with a sweep at Mesa Verde on Tuesday night. The Zebras won 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 and closed the year 10-12 overall and 3-9 in Pioneer Valley League play. Two of Lincoln’s league wins came against Mesa Verde. “It was good to end the season with a win,” Lincoln coach Mandy Retallack said. “But we didn’t play to our best, emotionally the girls were kind of out of it. Since (a five-game loss to Whitney on Oct. 27) we’ve been mentally out of it.” Brittany Browand served for nine points, collected 13 assists and had 16 digs against Mesa Verde while Rebekah Brumbaugh went for 10 kills and 11 digs. Gabi Edwards, playing libero for Lincoln, had nine digs while Shannon Kellar had a stat in every category (three points, two kills, one block, one assist, three digs). Kellar played both back and front row. Hailey Balli had six blocks and seven kills. Lincoln also played at Placer on Oct. 29 and lost 25-16, 26-24, 25-8. Retallack thought her team could beat the Hillmen and she was disappointed with the three-game loss. “I thought (we could win) but physically and mentally we didn’t play close to what we could have played,” she said. “Placer came to play and (Placer coach Jennifer Wright) only played all her seniors and they played with a lot of heart. “The second game we only lost by two points but it was a little mental let down from Whitney. Emotionally and physically they were exhausted.” Brumbaugh (seven digs, four kills, one block), Balli (four kills, one block), Samantha Whalen (two blocks), Browand (six assists), Kellar (seven digs), Edwards (five digs) and Emmalee Dornbush (four assists) were the leaders for Lincoln.
