Youth Center kids to sell jewelry

-A +A
All middle-school students are familiar with this phrase: “Show Me Your Work.” The 22 students involved with a jewelry-making class at the Lincoln Youth Center are proud to do just that. Former teacher and retired principal Sharon Kluball enlisted the help of two expert jewelry designers, Barbara Kurmas and me, to help students create projects they could be proud of. The three Sun City residents are members of Grace Lutheran Church. We were approached to create a program that would be hands-on and that would appeal to middle-level students. Officer Steve Kruezer and Juan Hernandez cooperatively run the Lincoln Youth Center at 391 6th St. Students, ranging in age from 9 to 15 meet once a week to design necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rosaries and ankle bracelets. The first project all students created was a necklace incorporating their names. Much of the supplies were donated; some from the Lincoln Police Activities League; some from a grant and money from Sun City residents who donated their unused jewelry. Students will be proudly selling their handcrafted jewelry at the Farmers’ Market in Lincoln through August. Look for the banner, “Lincoln Youth Center.” They would appreciate your support. All proceeds go directly to the students. Carol Lloyd, Lincoln
