William Jessup Warriors in the sporting news
The William Jessup University softball team split their games last week against California State University San Marcos and Biola University. That improved the Warriors' record to 16-8 on the season.
Saturday, No. 1 CSU San Marcos earned a 2-0 win. The Warriors posted five hits but couldn’t get any runs across.
WJU’s Emily Buhrkuhl pitched all seven innings striking out four and walking two.
The Warriors bounced back later that afternoon for a 5-3 victory over Biola’s Eagles.
Brittany Lamar went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and she scored a run.
The winning pitcher was Andrea Lutz. Lutz went 4 2/3 innings, striking out five. Buhrkuhl picked up a save.
During a road trip last week, Jessup swept La Sierra University in a doubleheader 14-0 and 10-1.
Lamar was 4-4 and schored three runs. Leesha Shoemaker, Riley Williams and Stephanie Rodriguez had two RBI apiece.
Buhrkuhl picked up the win allowing only two hits.
Lamar was 3-4 with a home run in the second game; Shoemaker was 3-4 with a double and Alannah Johns was also 3-4. Breihanna Castilleja, Mallory Blodgett and Courtney Olsen-Werling each had a double.
Lutz got the win giving up just two hits.
NOTE: Lamar was voted the California Pacific Conference Player of the Week after her 10-13 performance March 4-10. Lamar is a sophomore from Manteca.
Jessup’s Jessee Gardner earned the conference’s Golfer of the Week for March 4-10.
Gardner shot a 230 over three rounds at The Master’s College Spring Invitational at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Canyon Country.
William Jessup University placed three basketball players on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Division II Basketball Scholar-Athletes list recently.
Senior guard Heidi Louber and junior Brittany Smith were named for womens basketball and Keith Bruder was selected for mens basketball.
Louber maintains a 3.90 grade-point-average and is a native of Chico (major: youth ministry, minor: Bible and theology). Smith hails from San Ramon and carries a 3.87 (major: intercultural studies, minor: Bible and theology).
Bruder comes from Pleasant Hill and has a 3.52 GPA (major: history, minor: business administration).
