Whitney tops Woodland 29-7

Things did not look promising early for Whitney High’s varsity football team on Friday night, as the visiting Woodland Wolves took a 7-0 lead just minutes into the game. The Wildcats would rebound though, dominating the final three quarters 29-0 to win 29-7. Whitney, now 2-0 on the season, will play at Oakdale next Friday night. The second quarter saw things start to turn around for Whitney as sophomore quarterback Jake Rodrigues was able to run in a 20-yard touchdown with 10:55 left in the half on Friday. Whitney added a 38-yard field goal (sophomore Corey Palin) later in the half and went into the break up 9-7. The second half proved to be even better for the Wildcats as Rodrigues ran in another touchdown (two-yard plunge) with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Shawn Azam ran in a 22-yard touchdown just nine seconds into the fourth quarter as the Wildcats lead continued to grow. Whitney would add another touchdown (Rodrigues nine-yard pass to Nickolas McGovern) with just three minutes left in the game. Rodrigues rushed for 153 yards in the game while Azam gathered 151 rushing yards for the Wildcats. Both have rushed for over 100 yards in both games this season. Woodland's touchdown came on a 40-yard pass from Jonathan Wax to Mikael Preciado. Whitney’s next three games are on the road. Whitney’s junior varsity team beat Woodland 18-14 as J.T. Hearsch, Jordan Powell and Zonly Looman each scored touchdowns for Whitney. Freshmen Whitney 34, Woodland 6 Starting quarterback J.R. Robinson would lead the Wildcats to victory on Thursday night, running for two scores and throwing for another in the first half. Both teams were 1-0 entering the game. The Wildcats started the scoring frenzy in the first half with a 52-yard punt return by Walker Carpenter. Robinson ran in a 57-yard touchdown on the next drive to build on the Whitney lead. Woodland then returned a kickoff 90 yards for its only score of the night. Whitney defensive back Devin Reynolds then intercepted a pass and returned it 52 yards for Whitney's next touchdown. Also in the first half, Robinson connected with Brandon Monroe for a 35-yard yard touchdown and Robinson scored on a one-yard run. The second half would be a defensive and scoreless battle. Linebacker Chris Swartz had an interception for the Wildcats. Whitney will host Oakdale at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday.
