Founded in 2001, the nonprofit Western Music Round-Up works to preserve “old, traditional music,” according to its president, Georgia Fuentes. Western Music Round-Up recently awarded its first $500 scholarship – the Sal Sage Memorial Scholarship for Western Music – to Wheatland’s Sarah Nicole Don-Hursey. Sal Sage was married to Fuentes and helped found Western Music Round-Up. “When my husband passed away (three years ago), my daughter said in lieu of flowers we should set up a scholarship program,” Fuentes said. “This is the first one that’s been given away.” Donations to start the scholarship, according to Fuentes, came in from all over the western United States, including Hawaii. “My husband was a semi-professional musician who liked western music,” Fuentes said. “He founded WMR to keep the old music out there for people to listen to.” The Western Music Round-Up meets at 9 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of every month at Stewart Hall, located at 6005 Camp Far West Rd. in Sheridan. According to Fuentes, the business portion of the meeting winds up after about an hour, and then members play music. “It’s kind of a jam,” Fuentes said, adding that at this month’s meeting a cowboy musician will be coming in to put a house band together, starting at 1 p.m. “with music people can dance to.” Meetings are open to the public for $3 and to members for $1. Currently, the Western Music Round-Up has about 90 members. Membership for a couple costs $20 per year, and individual memberships run $12 per year. Anyone wishing to get involved in Western Music Round-Up can call Georgia Fuentes at 645-8521. Students wishing to apply for the Sal Sage Memorial Scholarship for Western Music can write to WMR – Scholarship Program, 661 Sixth St., Box 24, Lincoln, 95648. After filling out an application form, scholarship candidates will play three cowboy songs for the board of directors. One student will be selected to receive the scholarship.
