In a wild fourth quarter, the Oakmont Vikings rallied to stun Lincoln using a seldom-seen 2-point conversion to seal the 44-43 victory. After the Fighting Zebras’ Jordan Tayeh’s 25-yard touchdown run, Vikes’ quarterback Taylor Baird marched his club downfield to score. Oakmont coach Tim Moore decided to go with a somewhat bizarre, “bouquet” 2-point conversion rather than kick the extra point for the tie and send the game into overtime. Moore would later say, he made that decision so as not to have to face Lincoln’s relentless rushing attack. Lining up for an apparent kick, Laird took the snap. But instead of putting down the ball, he stood up and turned his back to his offensive line. He then flipped the ball over his head into the end zone where Oakmont receiver Justin Holmes made the catch. That two-point conversion gave the Vikes a one-point victory. Laird threw three touchdown passes in that final quarter to help propel his squad to victory. James Hubbard led the Zebra offense with 319 yards and three touchdowns that including one of 78 yards. Running backs Cameron Tatem, Eddie Cobleigh and Jordan Tayeh also scored behind an offensive line that took control in the second half. This Friday, Lincoln will try to shake off the loss in their Pioneer Valley League opener at Center. The Cougars are 4-1 in preseason play, Lincoln 3-2.
