Updated plan to keep PFE Road open

Supervisors approve plan to update county roads
-A +A
Despite surpassing its maximum allowed traffic volume, PFE Road will remain open after the Placer County Board of Supervisors approved an updated transportation plan last week. At the August 9 meeting, the supervisors adopted a resolution to approve an update the West Placer Community Plan Transportation and Circulation Element. The previous plan called for the closure of PFE Road at Cook-Riolo Road when the average daily traffic volume exceeded 5,000 vehicles per day which it is now surpassing due to substantial growth in the area. Officials and residents agreed that a closure was not a solution and decided upon some updates to the roadway network located in western Placer County. As part of the update, two key traffic issues were identified: the traffic diverter at the Baseline Road, Cook Riolo Road and Woodcreek Oaks Boulevard intersection, and the possibility of widening Walerga Road to six lanes. Traffic analysis showed that the diverter could be removed, but measures should be installed on Cook Riolo and PFE Roads to prevent them from becoming commute routes. Concerns were raised from the Doyle Ranch and Morgan Creek residential developments about the widening of the two-and-four-lane Walerga Road. After a series of meetings and discussions with residents, the Placer County Department of Public Works agreed to add language to the plan stating that an environmental review as well as a public hearing would be required when any widening is considered in the future. ~Staff report
