Beginning with Granite Bay High’s Justin Sutter in the boys long jump, local athletes begin the pursuit of state track and field titles Friday at 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis. Grizzly discus thrower James Kinloch also begins his trials round at 3 p.m., while the pole-vaulters – Jordon Alviso on the boys side and Katie Zingheim on the girls, along with Woodcreek’s Kayla Kamaka – open their effort at 5 p.m. Athletes who finish in the top nine at Friday’s trials earn the right to come back Saturday for the state finals. The events on the track get underway at 5 p.m. Friday night, with Oakmont’s Jazmin Harper competing in the girls 400-meter dash, Woodcreek’s relay team in the girls 4x400 and Granite Bay’s Christine Zavesky in the girls 1,600-meter run. Those 11 athletes are all gunning for a top performance that would bring them back on Saturday for the event finals, which get underway at 3 p.m. on the field and at 6 p.m. on the track. Granite Bay’s Brooke Holt and Woodcreek’s Courtney Crosta must both wait until Saturday to make their state meet entrance, as the duo will run in the girls 3,200-meter final. There is no Friday-night qualifier for the two-mile. Check and over the weekend to track the results of all 13 local athletes as they represent the area at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in Clovis.
