The Christmas tree star Christmas is my happiest time of the year I’m the star on top of a tree where I can hear Joyful remembrances as decorations are hung And the blending of voices as carols are sung Handmade by a newly married young man in ’53 He proudly placed me atop their first Christmas tree And every year since then I have always been there Still in good shape having been handled with care I’ve been packed away in a storage box for months For most objects, they’d be down in the dumps But I realize I have this special time each year To look forward to with pride and plenty of cheer Many special events have been witnessed by me Hearing “The Night Before Christmas” especially Each of the children would read aloud a page As their comprehension skills improved with age I’d get a laugh each year as father assembled toys Even with skinned knuckles, he’d maintain his poise It would all be worthwhile cause on Christmas Day The bike with training wheels would be on its way So many times I’ve watched Santa enter a room Knowing his presence would surely erase gloom Although times could be tough and presents were few Somehow he’d always find ways and knew what to do Mother made sure Santa always left dolls for the girls Nancy Nurse and Chatty Cathy both had cute curls Trains and racecar tracks were hits with the boys Their ever-smiling faces were worth all the noise Many dinner parties I’ve watched were a blast Friends come long distances to recall the past In recent times, I’ve seen some sadness and a tear Because one of the couples lost a partner that year Again this Christmas, I’m back in my prominent place High on a pine tree along with ornaments I can trace Back to that very first beautiful tree that I adorned I’m so happy for those many hearts I have warmed Dick Rooney is a Lincoln resident.
