SIRS fun and educational

-A +A

February was Black History Month.

At our February luncheon, the Lincoln/Roseville branch of Sons In Retirement had as our guest speaker Brad Schall, a Civil War historian, who spoke on the role of African-Americans in fighting the Civil War.

African-Americans were denied access to guns by the Confederate Army until 1865, when the war was almost over and thus African-Americans were confined to support functions, rather than serving as combat soldiers for the South. Twenty-two of Mr. Schall’s relatives actively fought in the Union Army. His talk was topical and interesting.

At our March 20th luncheon, Sons In Retirement will have Heath Wakelee, a volunteer with the Red Cross as guest speaker. He will talk on being prepared for a medical emergency (heart attack/stroke) or disaster (fire/flood). He will discuss how to develop an action plan to deal with medical emergencies or disasters. Menu for this luncheon is roast pork loin, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, salad, bread and dessert.

Sons In Retirement is a nonpolitical, nonreligious social group of retired men who meet monthly for lunch. After dessert, members are treated to entertainers or guest speakers of local interest, such as politicians, media celebrities, sports experts and business owners. The primary mission of SIR is to socialize and have fun. In addition to the general monthly luncheon meeting, subgroups meet regularly to golf weekly at different local courses and to play bridge at Raley’s on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month.

The Lincoln/Roseville branch of Sons In Retirement has approximately 125 members.

The Lincoln/Roseville branch of SIR has its regular monthly luncheon meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at the Roseville Elks Lodge, 3000 Brady Lane in Roseville. There are no dues or initiation fees; incidental expenses are covered by a $15 annual voluntary contribution from members. Three-course lunches cost $15. The Roseville Elks Lodge has a no-host bar for those who wish a drink prior to or with their lunch.

Anyone who is interested in joining the Lincoln/Roseville branch of SIR or in attending a luncheon of the local branch as a guest can contact current me, membership chair, at 408-8708.
