Sierra College men top Santa Rosa by one stroke
By: Staff report
Wes Sandroni, AJ Hasegawa and Steve Riley led the Sierra College men's golf team to a one-stroke victory over Santa Rosa in Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 7 on Tuesday at the Bidwell Golf Club in Chico. Sandroni (shot a 72) played the back nine holes in three under par while Hasegawa (74) finished with three birdies and a par over his final four holes. Riley also shot a 74 and was crucial to the victory. Sierra (375) narrowly beat Santa Rosa (376) and American River (377). Once we figured our score was good enough for a win, we were hoping American River would finish second (to) narrow the gap of Santa Rosa's (lead in the overall standings), Sierra coach Tim Hovancsek said. We all feel the hard fought match will be the turning point of our season and have dedicated ourselves to solid golf and achieving our goal of (repeating) as Big 8 Conference (champions). Santa Rosa (85) sits in first place while Sierra (82) and American River (71) round out the top three in the seven-team conference. There are four conference matches remaining. We have time to catch Santa Rosa and control our own destiny to a league title, Hovancsek said. The guys are starting to believe that every shot counts and (that) it takes six (players) to (shoot) 360. I guarantee we will achieve our goals. Sierra travels to Ripon today to play in Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 8 at Spring Creek Country Club.
