The Sierra College men’s golf team won Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 11 at Lincoln Hills Golf Club Tuesday and repeated as conference champions. Sierra’s top five golfers combined to shoot 354 on the par-72 course while Delta (366), Santa Rosa (376), American River (376), Napa (382), Butte (393) and Modesto (397) followed the Wolverines. Sierra set a school record by shooting six under par. Sierra collected 128 conference points this season while runner-up Santa Rosa had 122. Steve Riley (69), Robbie Bendorf (71), Wes Sandroni (71), Gavin Butcher (71), Austin Fink (72) and AJ Hasegawa (72) each played strong rounds for the Wolverines Tuesday. Riley, Bendorf, Sandroni, Fink and Hasegawa also earned all-league honors by placing in the top-10 in the Big 8. “I was impressed with the total team effort, their focus and heart to get the job done,” Sierra coach Tim Hovancsek said. “Now, I know they believe me when I preach ‘6 to 360.’” By that he means it takes six players doing their part to shoot 360 as a team. Sierra will participate in the Monday’s NorCal Championships at Brookside Country Club in Stockton.
