Second annual golf tournament benefits ZebrasBy: Joshua Gutierrez News Messenger Correspondent
On Sept. 28, the Lincoln High School Booster Club put together its second-annual Zebra Classic Golf Tournament. With a larger turnout over the previous year, the tournament raised more than $3,000. Those funds benefit Zebras’ programs that help promote growth and education of the student body. Participants ranged from Lincoln High staff to Zebras alumni and members of the community. The lighthearted competition was held at Turkey Creek Golf Club. A Lincoln group consisting of Paul Schmich, Scott Buehler, Larry Rhodes, and Brett Rozell won the tournament following a tie-breaker. Lincoln High Athletic Director Donna Tofft won the best drive of the event. To lower some of the scores, standout talent Abi Faingold lent her driving services for those more golfing-challenged. Faingold is a crucial part in the girl’s golf team at Lincoln, coached by tournament participant Tim Allen. The event is a revival of past tournaments that were once held under the same name. The booster club brought back the event last year in an effort to raise money for both the girls’ and boys’ golf team. To broaden the scope of contributors, the club expanded its reach to all Zebras’ clubs. The Lincoln Police Officers Association was the major sponsor for the event. Mikuni, Service Kings, Signs on Time, and many more local businesses contributed its success. Booster Treasurer Toby Faingold spoke about the importance of the club, as well as the need to promote each of their events. She is optimistic the tournament will return for its third-straight year, but stresses the importance of contributions by parents and the community. “We would like to continue this program,” said Faingold. “It’s a great way to contribute money back to programs with cutbacks.” To Join LHS Booster’s club, contact Linda Watanabe (membership) 916-672-1408; or visit lhs.wpusd.k12.ca.us and select the “Athletics” tab and, scroll down to “Boosters.” Membership information is on the left.
