Rib Festival scheduled

The Friends of Lincoln Kids nonprofit organization will hold its third annual Rib Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Beermann Plaza Sept. 12. The festival will include a petting zoo, pony rides, fun houses, jump/bounce houses, food vendors and, of course, ribs. Live music will also be available. There is no charge to attend the event. Last year, according to Lincoln Kids founder Jeff Greenberg, the festival raised about $7,500, which was donated to the Lincoln Police Activities League. The inspiration for the founding of the nonprofit organization was to allow youth to have access to local programs. “I wanted to make sure kids could partake in all the programs in our city,” Greenberg said. Although the Rib Festival has thus far been the organization’s only annual fundraiser, Greenberg said an expansion is in the works. “May 29 will be Lincoln’s first annual Italian Festival,” Greenberg said. Much like the Rib Festival, the Italian Festival will feature food and activities. Another change for the organization in the works for next year is the combining of the Rib Festival with Lincoln Arts’ inaugural A Day on the Green – an outdoor concert event. Greenberg founded the Friends of Lincoln Kids in 2005 and the organization is all volunteer. Currently, Lincoln Kids is looking for more volunteers and there are board positions open, Greenberg said. Anyone interested in becoming a part of the organization can contact Greenberg at 408-7503.
