The Lincoln High junior varsity football team used an unyielding defense to hold visiting Argonaut at bay until the offense got things rolling in the fourth quarter to give the Fighting Zebras a 12-0 victory, Sept. 23. Lincoln threatened in the second quarter driving inside the Mustangs’ 5-yard line. Running back Aaron Soto nearly broke the plane of the goal line for a touchdown when the ball came loose and rolled into the end zone. Argonaut recovered for a touchback and the half ended 0-0. In the third quarter, the Zebras again threatened. But a potential touchdown pass into the Mustangs’ end zone on fourth down fell incomplete to end the drive. Lincoln then drove to the Argonaut 9-yard line as the third quarter came to an end. In the fourth quarter, with just six seconds gone on the clock, running back Frankie Welch took the ball nine yards for the score. The Mustangs simply didn’t have enough left to answer. “That was not my touchdown,” said Welch, “that was my team’s touchdown. That was not my touchdown, that was my family’s.” Welch said the club came together in the second half and worked to earn the touchdowns. Welch added another touchdown on a 4-yard run with less than two minutes in the game for the final score. The Zebras’ defense was key as Argonaut never seriously threatened to score in the last two stanzas. “We realized they were getting tired and we just stuck with pounding the ball,” said Lincoln JV football head coach Wayne Paul. “(We gave) them a push in there, put the bodies in there, and just wore them down.” The win improved the Fighting Zebras’ to 2-3 after defeating Wheatland last week. Paul said his club is gaining confidence, and getting healthier. He said that allows him to utilize more players with fewer individuals having to play both offense and defense. Lincoln is off next week and will prepare to host Foothill High in their Pioneer Valley League opener, Oct. 7.
