In a battle to stay in the Lincoln Little League Majors’ race, the Rays outlasted the Cardinals 5-4 in a pitcher’s duel Tuesday.

The Cards’ Wyatt Arbaugh threw for 5 2/3s innings and struck out 14 batters while the Rays’ Gavin Young and Max Pettey combined for 11 Ks. Ironically, the St. Louis nine drew 10 base-on-balls while the Sunshine nine were given only four.

The key was in making their base runners count and that partially came off key hits from the Rays’ Nolan Chapple, Pettey and Ben Buhler who each drove in a run. Addison Ewing took advantage of some pitching errors to score and Buhler stole home.

The Cardinals rallied in the sixth for three runs with Cole Vineyard, Alonzo Anglada and Chase Christopherson coming in to score. Richard Moore drove in a run and Anglada scored his second run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch.

Christopherson almost tied the game in the seventh but was tagged out between third and home.
