Ramirez wins twice at state meet
By: Russ Edmondson The News Messenger
Senior Tony Ramirez made his last competition for Lincoln High a memorable one. The senior wrestler, competing at heavyweight, won two of his four matches on Friday at the CIF State Meet in Bakersfield. He was weakened by an illness all week but still managed to have some success against the best wrestlers in the state. I was hoping to make it to the second day but I was getting over being sick so that didn't help, Ramirez said. I was really zapped around the end of the first match but then I won my next two. After a close loss in the opening round Ramirez found himself trailing 5-1 to an opponent from Bakersfield in his next match. Ramirez fought back and won the match by pin in the third round. I did a take down and he went straight on his back, Ramirez said. And I just caught him. Ramirez then beat a Gilroy wrestler 5-2 before getting pinned by an opponent from Hemet in the second round of his final match. I chose bottom in the second round and I tried getting out but he put a barb wire (move) on, Ramirez said. Ramirez plans on playing football in college. Among the California schools showing interest are Menlo College (Atherton), University of Redlands and Pomona College (Claremont). Ramirez has also received interest from Dennison College in Ohio.
