Placer United U11 wins state cup
By: Brett Ransford, Special to The Press-Tribune
After weather conditions the prior weekend pushed back the Northern California State Cup Championship, the Placer United U11 Boys Gold outlasted the Modesto Ajax Saturday in Danville. Placer defeated Modesto 2-0 after losing or tying each of the first five meetings between the squads this season. Scotty Walsh had both goals for Placer. The first score came near the 20th minute of the first half as Alex Rocha played a through-ball that Walsh was able to chip over the goalkeeper’s head, and just narrowly drop into the goal. Modesto controlled possession in the first half and took three times as many shots on goal as Placer. Goalkeeping from Ethan Tooker, who had four saves in the first half (six in the game) kept Placer in front, fueling second-half efforts when Placer kept the ball more frequently in its opponents defensive half. Walsh’s second goal came off of a left-sided cross from just inside the eighteen yard line at about the 21st minute of the second half and served as a stamp on the team’s season. This team consists of boys transitioning from a smaller field and only eight players onto a bigger field with eleven players. Placer had a rough start to the season, but under the training of its coach, Matt Scamacca and manager Brad Tooker, the club made strides to earn the State Cup. “It’s a building process,” said Scamacca. “From the beginning of the season right up until the end. The boys have gotten progressively better all season and there were some times where we struggled. They have just gradually gotten better and they played unbelievably today.” Only a week after the State Cup it’s back to business for Placer as tryouts for next year’s teams begin Saturday at Oakmont High.
