Phillies, Braves stay atop Majors standings with wins Saturday

MCBEAN PARK _ The Lincoln Little League Majors Braves remained just percentage points behind the Phillies in the standings with a 16-3 victory over the Pirates in the opening game Saturday.

The Atlanta nine exploded for nine runs in the fifth inning to cut the game short.

Cole Cavarra hammered his sixth home run of the season with a 3-run blast in the first inning to make a statement for the Braves. Cavarra had four runs batted in; Nate Labrado had three and Michael Newsom two.

Hitting for the Braves were Cavarra (2), Dylan Rhodes (2), Newsom (2), Labrado (2), plus one each for Harry Rounds and Brandon Martinez. Rhodes also scored three runs.

The Bucs got a triple from Brennan MacDonald and two RBI from Matt Brown. Brown had three hits in the game. Dylan Quinn and Hunter Rhodes also had hits.

Cavarra recorded 10 strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings and was relieved by Rounds. Tommy Turner opened for the Pirates and was relieved by MacDonald and Jared Kelty.

The Cardinals just couldn’t be contained Saturday scoring 22 runs in downing the Giants by 13.

The Giants’ pitching simply couldn’t find the plate as the Cards picked up 16 hits and only two for extra bases.

Cole Vineyard and Alonzo Anglada scored four runs each and Richard Moore and Mile Pleich crossed the dish three times. Anglada had four singles and Pleich and Wyatt Arbaugh hit doubles.

The SF nine’s bats weren’t silent as they scored nine runs off seven hits.

Getting two hits apiece were Jack Corriveau, Jacob Lemus and Austin Ratliff. Lemus also had a double and he and Corriveau each had two RBI, Ratliff one.

On the mound for the Cards were Arbaugh and Chase Christopherson. Jack Corriveau, Dylan Thieman, Xavier Ortega and Ben Corriveau pitched for the Giants.

Saturday’s nightcap went to the Phillies scoring 13 runs in the final three innings to subdue the Rays 14-4.

Grady Manley had three hits in the game and drove in two runs. Kyle Easter also pounded out three hits to drive in four runs. Grady Manley doubled twice in the contest and Easter and Connor Manley each had one.

Addison Ewing hit a triple for the Rays and base hits were recorded by Max Pettey, Robert Delgado, Hagen Womack and Taylor Yates. Womack had two RBI and Ewing one.

The Phils’ Peter Ordonio threw for 4 2/3 innings and was relieved by Easter. The Florida nine sent Pettey, Nolan Chapple, Ewing and Ben Buhler to the mound.
