Lincoln High sophomore Shannon Snook set a personal record at the CIF State Meet at Woodward Park in Fresno Saturday. Snook placed 78th among 198 finishers in Division III with her record time of 19:53 on the 5k course. Lincoln moved up from DIV to DIII in 2006 and Snook was Lincoln’s first runner to ever compete in DIII. The last Lincoln runner to compete in the state meet was Kyle Knutson when he placed 48th among 195 runners in DIV in 2005. Snook placed seventh among the DIII runners in the Sac-Joaquin Section, moving up four spots from her place at the section meet two weeks earlier at Folsom High. Snook’s time was the fastest for a Lincoln girl since 2003, when Caitlin Croall ran 19:12 at the state meet. It is also the second fastest time for a Lincoln girl on a 5k course since cross country was reestablished at Lincoln in 2000. Snook was particularly proud of the fact that she finished so close behind Placer junior Shannon Harcus (71st, 19:47). “I got really close to her and she always wins our section (races) – and I was only six seconds away from her,” Snook said. “I was really happy that I beat it (her own top time) and I kind of expected to beat it. (The course) was faster and harder and it was fast-paced the whole time. And there were some hills but not a whole lot of them.” She also enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the big event and the competition was about how she expected it to be. “There were a whole bunch of people there and I knew there would be so many people in front of me and a lot of harder runners,” Snook said. Snook’s Lincoln teammates Samantha and Jennifer Keck and Heather Felt were at the race cheering her on. “They (teammates, family, coaches) were happy for me and excited for me and they all congratulated me and stuff,” Snook said. Snook says that the weekend was the highlight of her season. “Saturday really stood out and not just because of the race,” she said. “We stayed there (overnight) with Heather and Sam and Jenny. And the other race that stands out was subsections – that was fun and we traveled (to Angels Camp). I like going far away.”
