As the one-year anniversary of the murder of Robert Vargas approaches, Placer County Sheriffs are still looking for the killer. “It’s still an open case,” said Dena Erwin, spokeswoman for the department. “Nothing significant has changed over the past year, but we’re continuing to look for new leads that will help us solve this case.” Vargas was 32 when family members found his body in the brush behind his house on S. Forbes Road on July 25, 2008, according to a press release from the Placer County Sheriff’s Department. An autopsy revealed he had died from a gunshot wound. Detectives working the case are still looking for leads and would like to speak with anyone who has any information. Those with information pertaining to the case are urged to call Placer County Crime Stoppers at 800-923-8191. Callers can remain anonymous, and there is a cash reward for any information leading to an arrest, Erwin said.
