Local stars for Fullerton in soccerBy: Staff Report
Former Lincoln resident and Sierra College graduate Katie Pulliam made good on her scholarship to Cal State University Fullerton recently.
The goalkeeper shut down penalty kicks in separate games with UC Riverside and Cal Poly to give the Titans the Big West Conference title.
Pulliam blocked four PKs in the match with Cal Poly and three against Riverside to claim the crown after CSUF answered with the winning goals.
For her efforts, Pulliam was named the tournament MVP and dubbed the Mariano Rivera, “The Closer,” of soccer by Riverside. She was also ESPN 3’s “Hero” after going 9-for-12 in PK saves in three matches.
Pulliam was brought in off the bench in last year’s semifinal match to halt three UC Irvine PKs and help the Titans advance to the finals.
In the NCAA College Cup Nov. 15, Stanford University pulled out a narrow 1-0 victory over the Titans.
Pulliam also played soccer at Sierra College and played basketball in high school.
Pulliam will graduate in May with a BS in Kinesiology and do graduate work at UC Davis.
She credits Garret and Melissa Everts of Lincoln for inspiring her to play the game and for trainer Simon Sheppard’s help.
“He worked with me in my sophomore year in high school, and again while I was home last spring break,” Pulliam said. “He gave me the tools that I have in my toolbox.”
