Little League Opening Day to be March 14
By: Carol Feineman, News Messenger Editor
Lincoln residents will want to mark their calendars for Saturday, March 15. That’s opening day for Lincoln Little League, according to Caron Russell, a parent helping publicize the event. “The parade will be downtown (7th Street to F, 5th, D to McBean. We should kick off at 9 a.m.,” Russell said. “There will be approximately 1,000 children in the parade.” Grand Marshall this year will be a team of Lincoln Little League All Stars who played in town in 1980. This team of 12 year olds (the official age of “Little Leaguers”) “was the team that went the farthest in the Little League All-Star tournaments in Lincoln ’s history,” according to Russell. Opening ceremonies follow at each leagues’ fields (Little League at McBean and Lincoln Girls Softball Association at Twelve Bridges). Little League will hold exhibition games throughout the day. Since all teams will play two-inning games, all of the Little Leaguers will play. “It is a great day of fun for the kids – a terrific way to kick off the baseball season,” Russell added. This year, Little League is celebrating its 50th year in Lincoln. Today, the league has more than 630 children in 42 baseball teams, according to Russell. More details of the March 15 event will be in next week’s paper.
