The Varsity-football Zebra’s began their 2012 campaign with an impressive 48-6 win over the Natomas Nighthawks. On the first drive of the game, Lincoln displayed their three-headed attack of Cameron Tatum, James Hubbard and Jordan Tayeh. With each having one attempt, the trio completed a 44-yard drive that ended with the first touchdown of the season for the Zebras. Hubbard’s 28-yard score was the first of what turned out-to-be a flurry of offense in the first half. The next Zebra strike came with a play-action pass from starting quarterback Davis Dykstra to Tatum on a 25-yard completion. Hubbard scored again four minutes later with an 11-yard run that increased the lead to 21-0. In the second quarter, Tatum reeled off a 42-yard run and caught a 9-yard touchdown from Dykstra. In total, the Zebras completed each of their first five offensive drives with a touchdown. As if a 34-0 lead wasn’t sufficient, the defensive squad contributed with 21-yard interception return by defensive-back Stephen Lewis. In the second-half of the game, the Zebra defense continued their smothering performance. The Nighthawks struggled to move the ball against the blue-and-gold all night. Penalties and pressure played a crucial part in the Nighthawks inability to sustain a drive. Finally with a lot of the second-team playing the second half, Lincoln allowed Natomas their first score of the night on a touchdown pass. Head Coach Ken Lowe attributed his team’s performance with the weeks of practice and scrimmages with other schools. “We’re starting to come together,” said the coach. “Tonight, we really came to play.” The duo of Tatum and Hubbard propelled the Zebras with a total of five scores on the night. “We had a lot of preparation,” said Hubbard, who scored twice in the first half. “Everything we practiced this week looked exactly like what we did.” After the game, with a three touchdown performance under his belt, Tatum expressed his feelings on the road ahead. “Every game,” said Tatum. “We’re ready to win.” Team 1 2 3 4 F Lincoln 21 21 0 6 48 Natomas 0 0 0 6 6 JV Lincoln 44, Natomas 6 Team 1 2 3 4 F Lincoln 20 24 0 0 44 Natomas 6 0 0 0 6
