Eslinger takes fourth at state
The Lincoln High wrestling team closed out its California Interscholastic Federation wrestling 2011-12 campaign with one grappler placing four at state, and the other finishing up at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters. Gabrielle Eslinger, wrestling at 106 pounds, fell a bit short of her goal of reaching the championship match in the CIF State Girls Wrestling finals. Eslinger, a junior, captured fourth place at state at Lemore High School where the championships were held, Feb. 25. Eslinger placed second in the championships last year. Junior Ero Wainio did the Fighting Zebras proud by reaching the master’s quarterfinals before falling in the 152-pound weight class. Wainio was defeated by Oakmont’s Jake Elliot, who went on to win the championship. “I just wish the kids to be healthy,” said Lincoln wrestling head coach Mike Maul. “Now they know what it’s going to take for next year.” The Zebras had a lot of injuries this season slowing the program’s progress. However, the blue-and-gold will only lose a couple of seniors who were healthy enough to complete the campaign.
