A young but talented Lincoln High track and field team wrapped up its regular season and now heads for Colfax to compete in the Pioneer Valley League Trials scheduled for Wednesday and Friday. Although it isn?t likely the Fighting Zebras will advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II-III Trials as a team, there are some athletes who could qualify as individuals. The top four from the PVL Trials will advance. With the exception of about three seniors, the Lincoln club is made up almost entirely of underclassmen. The top performing group was the Zebra?s freshman/sophomore team. ?We?re got new guys that are coming in that are learning the drills and what?s expected of them in practice,? said Lincoln head coach Eric Williams, now in his third season at the helm. ?We?ve been trying to get into place the program and now we have a core of people who know what to do.? Athletes who could make it to sections are seniors Matthew Probst (shot put, discus) and Stephen Hay (hurdles, pole vault). Probst ranks at the top in the discus and third in the shot put. Hay, who went to sections in both hurdle events last year, hopes to repeat. He ranked fourth in the 110-meter, 39-inch high hurdles but was ninth in the lows. He stood in fifth place in the pole vault. Sophomore sprinter Liam Hao ranks fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100m and 200m. Classmate Leo Calderon was sixth in the 300m low hurdles, seventh in the long jump, and runs with the 4x400 relay team that also includes Zachary Evans, Miguel Franco and Hao. ?I think our (4x400) team might have a chance to get top four also,? Williams said, ?and those guys are all sophomores. So the future looks good.? At the top of the list for the girls are Kelsi Snook and Savannah Berkley, both juniors. They rank third in the PVL in the pole vault at 8 feet 6 inches. Williams said the two push each other in practice. Snook stands in eighth in the high jump and Berkley seventh in the 100m high hurdles. Sophomore Kali Federwich is a strong distance runner ranking fourth in the 3200m and fifth in the 1600m. Sophomore Katy Mercier and senior Sammy Klipp also have an outside chance in the distance competition. Center Dual Meet For the varsity boys, sophomore Josh Myers led the way taking first in the discus (119-10 ½) and second in the high jump (5-8). Probst won the shot put. Snook led the girl?s squad winning the high jump and pole vault. Christa Kittle captured the long jump. The frosh/soph team defeated the Cougars for a 4-1 season record. No. 1 was Marcus Harris in the 400m, Dustin Horse in the 800m, Dylan Toerpe in the 1600m and Pascual Marquez III in the 3200m. Jonathon Manzer took the shot put, Kiernen McKnight the discus and high jump, and Toerpe the pole vault. Sac Town Races The Zebras placed 12th in Whitney High?s annual frosh/soph meet Saturday. Myers jumped 5-10 to win the high jump and Hao was fourth in the 100m and long jump. Myers also picked up the No. 5 spot in the shot put. Calderon was eighth in the long jump.
