CITRUS HEIGHTS — Lincoln High School’s offense moved the ball so well Thursday night at MacArthur Field that the chains snapped at the start of the third quarter.

The Fighting Zebras (3-1) rolled Mesa Verde 55-6 behind a dominant performance by their offensive and defensive lines.

“My offensive line, they really did get off the football, and that makes a big difference for us,” Lincoln coach Ken Lowe said. “Our defense just played really good.”

The offense amassed 446 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns on drives of four plays or fewer. Senior running back Jordan Tayeh led Lincoln with 98 yards on the ground, including a one-yard scoring run in the second quarter. The offense subbed its starters before the end of the first half with a 48-0 lead, and 11 players carried the ball.

Junior running back Eddie Cobleigh started the onslaught when he caught a Davis Dykstra pass for a seven-yard touchdown with 8:23 left in the first quarter. James Hubbard, who rushed for 68 yards, picked up two scores in the first quarter. The first came on a 36-yard reception from Dykstra, and his 16-yard run gave Lincoln a 20-0 lead.

Cobleigh also rushed for a touchdown with 3:48 left in the first half.

Defensively, the Zebras kept Mesa Verde (1-3) from passing its 41-yard line until the final series of the first half. The Mavericks’ touchdown came in the third quarter against Lincoln’s second-team defense.

The dominant performance was much-needed for the Zebras following last week’s 32-27 loss to Wheatland, in which Lincoln trailed 20-0 early.

After the win, the Zebras’ attention quickly turned to Oakmont, which Lincoln will host Sept. 28.

“It feels great,” said senior running back Cameron Tatem, who scored two touchdowns. “We just need to keep it up next week for Oakmont. We need to come out of the preseason with a great record so we can enter our league.”
