Lincoln resident Mitchell Austin Jones, 20, died Sunday after being struck by a train. Jones sustained major trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lincoln Police Department Lt. David Ibarra. Ibarra said the conductor sounded the horn and applied the brakes in an effort to stop the train. Emergency personnel from the Lincoln police and fire departments had been dispatched at approximately 3 p.m. on Jan. 3 to the area between First Street and Ferrari Ranch Road “on a report that a train had just struck a pedestrian,” said Ibarra. Jones’ death is being investigated as an accident by the Lincoln Police Department and the Union Pacific Railroad, because there was no indication of foul play or suicide, said Ibarra. “You should never walk on the train tracks, it’s against the law,” Ibarra said when asked how this could have been avoided.
