The Lincoln Library’s secret weapon: elves
We love a bargain and the Friends of the Lincoln Library book sales are one of the best around (and raise money for programs and new books). We have a big sale in the library’s rotunda four times a year and a small specialty sale this Saturday, Dec. 8 (plus on ongoing sale inside the library).
Shirley Russell has organized our sales for years and does a great job — our book sales are famous for the bargains and for being neat and well-organized. Russell has helpers — she calls them “book elves.” And what they do is nothing short of magic.
“Our key volunteer book elves”, Russell says, “do the day-to-day backroom duties.” Regulars such as Kerrigan (K. C.) Clark, Alice Dehner, Linda Morley and Sally Murad are long-term elves that we can’t thank enough. This year, Adrianne Barnard and Charlotte Grone joined the team.
Occasionally, library volunteers will drop by to help (if the library needs have been met). And some pitch in for the quarterly book sales, including Jeff Greenberg and myself. And we have to thank a cadre of day-of-sale elves: Alice Dehner, Maggi Forte, Terri Frank, Sharron Harcarik, Vi Kuka, Nina Mazzo, Dale McCoy, Gretel McLane, Linda Morley, Mary Nader, Ginger Nickerson, Paul Radcliffe and Laura Vanzandt.
The “elves” make sure buyers get books that are easy to find and are in great shape. Fiction is sorted so that older titles are cheaper and non-fiction is shelved by genre.
Paperback books are weeded (we don’t sell badly-worn books — they’re recycled or donated to charity). Some books go to the library collection or are sold online.
Our holiday book sale is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
How to donate books
We always need donations of good, saleable books. Bring them to the back door of the Twelve Bridges Library (next to the book drop) during library open hours and K. C. will likely be there to help bring in the books. If you do a pre-sort before you donate and remove really old or damaged books, you will help keep the book elves cheery (to volunteer, call 434-2404).
A special thank you to Lowe’s
A big “thanks” goes to Mike Obeso, manager of the Lowe’s on Highway 65 in Lincoln, for donating the lovely Christmas tree in our Lincoln Public Library at Twelve Bridges. Swing by and visit our beautifully-decorated tree. Note that the library is closed for the holidays from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1.
