Lincoln frosh win opening league game

CITRUS HEIGHTS _ In spite of multiple turnovers on both sides, the Lincoln freshmen football team won its first league contest over Mesa Verde 32-20. After the Mavericks recovered a fumble in the Fighting Zebras’ end zone for the first score, Lincoln answered on its next possession. Kyle Hite scored a rushing touchdown and Tanner Keeler followed with a 2-point conversion. Mesa Verde went up 14-8 following their second score and went into intermission with the lead. To start the second half, the Zebras’ Daniel Leyva delivered a pooch kick alertly recovered by his teammates. That set up a TD run by Caleb Kettlehut. Quarterback P.J. Manley ran for the 2-point conversion. The Mavericks proved slow to learn when Leyva executed another successful onside kick. That allowed Kettlehut and Manley to repeat their performance as well. Mesa Verde was again taken by surprise when a hard kick by Leyva bounced off the knee of one of the Mavericks and was recovered by the Zebras. Manley then moved his club downfield culminated by Keeler’s touchdown run. For the extra point, Scott Trembinski scooped up a muffed snap and ran it in for the final two points of the game.
