Lincoln cross country puts two on All League team

A young Lincoln High School cross country team held its own against some formidable opponents in the Pioneer Valley League’s third and final meet of the season; the girls placed third, and the boys came in fourth. The Fighting Zebras’ Katy Mercier and Kyle Ebert were both named to the PVL’s All League roster following their 10th and fifth-place finishes in their respective divisions. Mercier, a sophomore, covered the 3-mile course in 21:27 to lead the Zebras’ girls squad. She was followed by freshman Silvia Fernstrom (13th), freshman Annika Lehenbauer (22nd), senior Sammy Klipp (24th), and junior Kelsi Snook (28th). Just behind them were Savannah Berkley, and Guadalupe Calixto. Both runners are juniors. There were 47 runners in the girls varsity competition. The Fighting Zebras girls varsity squad were third in the final PVL standings. Ebert, a sophomore, was less than a minute behind the winning time of 16:22, set by Placer senior Christian Finkbeiner. Filling out Lincoln’s team totals were sophomore Dylan Toerpe (17th), junior Sean Gage (29th), junior Brendan Martin (30th), and sophomore Leo Calderon (34th). Also running for the Zebras’ boys were Jacob Edwards, Michael Noles, Uriah Smith, Bryant Garcia, and Ivan Lumba. All are juniors, except for Noles, who is a senior. The Fighting Zebras boys varsity ended up in a tie for third with Center in the final PVL standings. Frosh/Soph _ The freshman/sophomore girls team also claimed third in the PVL meet, running over a 1.75-mile course. Freshman Kelsey Prentice, and sophomore Loreena Sims placed 7th and 8th respectively to lead the Zebras in a field of 24. Sophomore Corinne Lewis (19th), freshman Lauren Gage (20th), and freshman Maya Peterson (21st) rounded out the team of five. The boys took second place behind the pace of Jake Palmyra, who came in sixth. Right on his heels were Evan Deatherage (7th), Liam Hao (8th), Jake Stern (9th), and Jaden Wood (10th). Runners Logan Balentine, Mathew Binning, Daniel Hagge, Renato Agurto, and Billy Klipp ranged from 11th to 20th in completing the race. Placer was tops in all divisions, and also took the No. 1 spot for individual runners in all four classes.
