Lincoln advances after day one at annual tournament
As day one of Lincoln High’s Chavez Christmas Classic came to a close, the Lincoln varsity girls basketball team finished an exciting day with a 58-43 win over Forest Lake Christian.
The Zebras opened the game with a 10-0 run and finished the period with a 20-8 lead. Though the Falcons made the second period more competitive, the Zebras still managed to take a 10-point lead into the half.
Sophomore point guard Taylor Galli kick-started the second half, collecting two assists and taking the Zebras' offense on an 11-4 run.
In the final period Maureen Sarigumba led the Zebras with aggressive play on the defensive end. Sarigumba twice intercepted a pass and spanned the length of the court for a layup. The senior guard finished the period with six points and 10 for the night.
Cassandra Jaimes made her presence felt under the basket, collecting double-digit rebounds and leading the Zebras with 12 points.
On a night where both teams shot under 30 percent from the field, free throws played a pivotal role in Yuba City’s 49-39 win over Rio Linda.
Rio Linda struggled at the line, going 4-for-21 for the night. The Lady Knights tried closing the gap from beyond the arc, but hit only 3-for-17.
Despite these struggles, the Knights cut a once 10-point lead down to just a field goal with six minutes to play. But the comeback was short lived, as Rio Linda fell into a 1-for-14 shooting slump to end the game.
Yuba City’s Tiffany Friend carried the Honkers at the line, converting 7-of-9 attempts in the third period. Her points were critical as her team scored only four points from the floor in that quarter.
In the night’s most competitive matchup, Oroville held off a late rally by West Campus to advance in the tournament with a 47-46 win.
With less than six minutes left in the game, the Warriors found themselves down by 13. A 10-0 run in the next five minutes put them in place to spoil a second half controlled by Oroville.
In the final minute, the Warriors had three opportunities to take the lead, but their shooting went dry.
West Campus’ late charge could be credited to Haley Shaner’s late 3-pointers. The senior center finished the night with 19 points.
Oroville’s Britteny Jenkins led the Tigers with 12 points.
In the tournament’s opening game, Oakmont went big. The Vikings attempted 43 shots from beyond the arc and used Sacramento Waldorf’s High turnover rate to advance with a 67-33 win.
The Waves did fight back to pull within seven of Oakmont by the time the third period ended. However, Brittany Martin and Sydney Sattleberg contributed seven points apiece in the final period to help the Vikes pull away. The Waves did themselves no favors turning the ball over 17 times in the final stanza.
Ella Haberman played well for the Waldorf, playing nearly the entire game. The senior guard scored in every period and finished the night with 13 points.
