Lincoln High’s Jeremy Orteza and Jessica Ho will compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section, Division IV tennis championships today in Stockton. Orteza, a sophomore, has been Lincoln’s top singles player on the boys side this year while Ho, a freshman, has held the same position for the girls. The pair will play mixed doubles after advancing to the finals at the Pioneer Valley League tournament Friday. Neither advanced in singles’ play at the tournament the day before so Lincoln coach Tim Allen decided to team them up in mixed doubles. Both were voted all-league by the PVL coaches (top eight boys and top eight girls are all-league) and teammates Ethan Theodore (junior) and Milja Djurin (senior) earned an honorable mention. Theodore and Djurin went 12-0 in league play as a mixed doubles’ team this season. Lincoln seniors Greg Hill and Philip Bohm reached the semifinals as a team but lost to Colfax. Orteza and Ho were nearly eliminated in the second round Friday against a team from Placer. The Lincoln duo dropped the first set 6-3 and trailed in the second set 5-3 before winning that set in a tiebreaker, 10-8. They also won the third set in a tiebreaker, 13-11. Orteza and Ho then defeated an El Dorado pair before falling to another Placer team in the finals. The top two teams advanced to today’s section tourney in Stockton. “It’s amazing for a sophomore and a freshman, who had never played together and hadn’t played doubles all year, to play so well on big points,” said Allen about that second-round comeback.
