United States triple jumper Aarik Wilson, who has family in Lincoln, failed to qualify for the finals in the Olympics in Beijing, China last week. Wilson’s stepmother, Sheri Wilson, and his half siblings, Evan (age 17) and Taylor (14), were rooting on Aarik Wilson from their home in Lincoln. Aarik participated in the preliminaries and scratched on his first attempt and then jumped 15.51 meters and 15.97 meters on his final two attempts. He was over a meter short of what he needed to qualify for the finals (17.1). Aarik, 25, placed first at the Olympic Trials (17.431 meters) despite a fracture in his left leg that he suffered in May. However Aarik, who lives in Kansas, reaggravated the injury just before the Olympics.
