SACRAMENTO — Lakeside Little League fans held their breath but finally exhaled as their Major all-star team defeated Lincoln 11-9 in the first round of the Section 4 Tournament on Saturday at Tahoe Tallac.

Lakeside led 10-2, but after a five-run fourth inning, Lincoln made it a nail biter to the end.

“That’s a heck of a team,” Lakeside manager John LeBeau said of Lincoln. “I’m just happy that we’re swinging the bat and hitting the ball hard. As long as we’re hitting the ball, we’re in good shape.”

Lakeside bats were rolling the entire way. One-two hitters Blake Peterson and Brandon Chinnapongse each scored three runs. Chinnapongse smacked four singles, matching the number of syllables in his name.

“I just focused on getting hits,” he said. “We had a rally, and I thank our team for that.”

Lakeside used four pitchers to grind through the game. Starter Jade Foddrill was removed after two innings to keep his pitch count low. Kevin Riley and Collin Stanaway worked the middle innings. Kenny LeBeau was called upon in the fourth with a three-run lead and allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings. He struck out four.

Riley hit a clutch solo homer in the top of the sixth to make it a two-run game.
LeBeau allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom half but ended with a strikeout and two groundouts.

“Like I told our kids, give those guys some credit,” LeBeau said of Lincoln. “They fought hard. They kept swinging the bat, and they’re a good team. I don’t know if we’d do anything different. We threw strikes, and they hit the ball. That’s the game.”

Lakeside plays at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the winners’ bracket final.

“We need to focus on pitching and just keep on hitting,” Chinnapongse said.
