ANAHEIM _ It took more than a bomb scare to rattle the Lincoln Jr. Zebras Mitey Mites at the 15th annual USA Jr. National Cheerleading Competition held at Disneyland California Adventure earlier this month as they turned nervous energy into a winning performance. After three days of preparation before the teams were to begin competing at the Aladdin Theatre the clubs were informed around 9 a.m. that Disneyland Park was shut down because of a bomb threat. After several hours of doing hair, makeup and glitter, everyone was left in a panic wondering what was going to happen. By 11 a.m., officials had declared the park safe, but the performance times of 80 teams had to be rescheduled. “Everyone was stressed out,” said Mitey Mites head coach Sunshine Handley. “The whole incident was crazy!” In order to loosen up her girls, Handley told them to go out big, have fun and smile; after all, she said, it’s the happiest place on earth. Handley said the girls sometimes get so focused they forget to work the crowd with their charm. Her strategy worked as the Jr. Zebras Mitey Mites took first place. Santa Rosa’s Stallions were second and the Woodcreek Jr. Timberwolves third. “My girls are amazing,” said Handley, who would text her coaches before each competition with, Who Rocks the House? “There is no other word to describe them. I am so proud of each and every one of them,” Handley added. It was the culmination of nine months of blood, sweat and tears, Handley said. As the youngest of the Jr. Zebras cheer teams many of the girls had no previous experience, but their willingness to always learn more paid off in a big way. The Jr. Zebras Open Midgets squad was also in the competition and took third place. The teams from Livermore and Woodcreek took first and second respectively.
