To promote community tennis and raise funds for two high school tennis programs, the inaugural LARTA Tennis Spectacular honoring Ron Gilman will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18 at the Del Webb Lincoln Hills Tennis Pavilion.

LARTA stands for Lincoln and Rocklin Tennis Association, a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 to promote tennis and support local youth tennis programs.

Gilman, who recently died, was an enthusiastic tennis player and leader at the Lincoln Hills Tennis Group, which has 360-plus members.

“We did not want to call it a tournament, as that would take away the value of the full experience of the (May 18) event,” said Peter Schor, the Lincoln Hills Tennis Group chairman.  “The true purpose of the event is to promote tennis in the local community, raise funds for local high school tennis teams (Lincoln High and Whitney High) and build a stronger bond between Lincoln youth tennis and Lincoln Hills members.”

Participation in the tournament portion of the event will be limited to Del Webb Lincoln Hills residents and the local high school teams. However, the public is invited to play the fun tennis games/drills (subject to availability) and watch the exhibition tennis.

“Want a better connection to the wonderful city of Lincoln and the high schools.  Tennis is a game for all ages. It is my goal to use this event to help bridge the gap between seniors and the city of Lincoln’s residents,” Schor said.

To help the Lincoln and Whitney High school tennis programs, Schor said residents can donate $25 or more and receive a special T-Shirt.   Make checks payable to LARTA and mail to Tim Allen, Lincoln High School tennis coach, at 3307 Kathy Way, Loomis, CA 95650.

During the May 18 tennis spectacular, Lincoln Hills Tennis Group Senior Men and Women players will be paired with the Lincoln and Whitney high school boys and girls in doubles play.

Other activities May 18 include:

 * Denise Esrey, the No. 1 women’s US Open WHEELCHAIR tennis player putting on  an exhibition on center court playing against some of the able body men and women players
