Highway 65 onramp closure delayed
A planned closure of the Lincoln Boulevard onramp to southbound Highway 65 is being delayed due to weather and the Thanksgiving holiday, according to Caltrans.
The onramp was originally scheduled to be closed Nov. 20 through Jan. 11 due to construction, according to Caltrans spokesman Gilbert Mohtes-Chan.
Mohtes-Chan said Caltrans and the contractor will reevaluate next week when the closure will take place and update the public.
The road was set to be closed Nov. 20. A contractor is scheduled to revamp the freeway entrance and install a new traffic signal, according to Caltrans.
The work is part of the $325 million Highway 65 Lincoln Bypass project., which opened to traffic Oct. 7.
When this latest construction occurs, the “S curve” portion of the Lincoln Boulevard southbound onramp to Highway 65 will be modified to become a turn movement, said Celia McAdam, executive director of Placer County Transportation Planning Agency.
“The motorist will have a choice to turn southbound on Lincoln Boulevard or keep going straight to go to Industrial Boulevard,” McAdam said. “A park and ride lot will be constructed just south of the southbound onramp onto Highway 65 from Lincoln Boulevard.”
McAdam said the park and ride lot fronting Industrial Boulevard will initially have 150 spaces with the potential for expansion up to 500 spaces.
Unexpected weather or other events may prolong or cause the work to be rescheduled.
Work on the second phase of the Lincoln Bypass, which started in May, is under way to add two lanes in each direction on the Lincoln Bypass from Nelson Lane to .9 miles north of Wise Road. That project cost is $23 million.
McAdam said motorists are driving on what will become the northbound lanes. Caltrans is constructing the southbound lanes. When everything is finished, there will be two lanes in each direction.
There is no money currently to extend the bypass to four lanes for the remainder of the bypass, which connects back to the existing Highway 65 at Riosa Road in Sheridan.
“Most of the traffic is south of Wise Road at least for the foreseeable future,” McAdam said. “When the economy comes back, we’ll get the remainder of the bypass done.”
