Highway 65 detour at Sterling Parkway to open Wednesday By Tom Cosgrove Special to The News Messenger Many in the community are wondering about the delays to the opening of the detour of the Highway 65 south traffic at the Sterling intersection that will re-route traffic under the new bridge. Rainy days and cool weather has delayed the June 1 opening but Caltrans has set a new target date for this shift to occur next Wednesday. Of course, this depends on the weather remaining clear and warm. And recently a question came up, asking what will happen to Highway 193 (McBean Park Drive in town) when the bypass opens. The answer is that a relinquishment agreement between the city and Caltrans was signed a couple of years ago. That agreement becomes effective when the Highway 65 bypass is opened. The agreement turns over to the city the portion of Highway 193 from the city limits to the current Highway 65 intersection (G Street). Once Caltrans no longer has jurisdiction for that section of roadway, the city can then alter and modify it to better suit the needs of our community and can also make the decision to close the road for events if we choose. Caltrans has also committed to working with the city to obtain funding for the Highway 193 bridge over Auburn Ravine to improve the flow of water under the bridge and the flow of traffic over the bridge, including NEV traffic.
